A Virtual Mountain Goat Run

Thank you to everyone for your understanding as we’ve tried to work through a rapidly
evolving situation of uncharted waters and unprecedented times. Please read below for the adjustments we’re making to the 2020 Mountain Goat Run. 

Saturday March 21st, 2020

Dear Mountain Goat Running Community,

On March 16, 2020 we originally postponed the 2020 Mountain Goat Run anticipating we could find an alternate date.  Unfortunately with the lack of a real timetable on COVID-19 restrictions, daily closings, regulatory modifications, and potentially limited medical and government agency resources in the near future, we don’t see continued postponement as reasonable or prudent. 

For those wondering about your registration money, the Mountain Goat Run Foundation is a not-for-profit.  We provide a safe, secure, closed to traffic 10-mile road race through the City of Syracuse streets with aid stations for water and Gatorade under the guidance of Syracuse Police, AMR medical personnel, and 500 volunteers on the course.  

Our race registration fees along with sponsor contributions generate the funds to provide premium items for our racers, medals for our finishers, time-bonus patches, age group awards, Goat Herder shirts for our volunteers, entertainment along the course and in Clinton Square, post-race refreshments, including adult beverages, police and medical support, and contributions for our partner not-for-profits.  

Mountain Goat Run donated over $18,000 to the following organizations in 2019: Greater Strathmore Neighborhood, Good Ole Boys Bassmasters Club, Tully Interact Group, Kirk Park Colts, Westhill High Student Activities Fund, Friends of Camillus Park, Tully Boys Running Club, Fifty-six Cases, Syracuse Track Club, Upstate Foundation, Wonderful Tipperary Hill Neighborhood Association, The MOST, Downtown YMCA, Section III Athletic Scholarships.  

With the COVID-19 pandemic arriving at this late stage of preparation, we have already incurred expenses for the runners’ premium shirts, shoebags, training run shirts, bibs and finisher medals (dated for 2020), in addition to race event infrastructure. 

THE GOOD NEWS: we’re going to put those premium items and medals in your hands for running the FIRST-EVER virtual Mountain Goat Run, a historic moment in our 42-year history.

Our policy has been “no refunds, transfers or deferrals” for several years.  We are making a change for our 2020 event in appreciation of our participants. Current participants in the 10-mile run and the 2-person relay will automatically be transferred to our virtual event. 

We are also offering the option to:

1) Defer your registration to 2021 at no additional charge

2) Let others run by donating your registration fee to Section III scholarships for runners, or

3) Request a 50% refund which will be issued sometime in April

Race fees are non-refundable per the original race waiver – however, we wanted to make an exception at this time for those who need it. 

We will automatically transfer your race registration for the 10-mile event and the two-person relay to our virtual event.  You’ll have a collectors’ item medal from the 2020 virtual event AND if you choose to run in 2021, your 2020 medal links to our FIRST-EVER two-year medal combo.  

Take a look at what we planned to release at IBU Brewery’s “To Hill and Bock” beer tasting on March 21, 2020 (March 21, 2020 event also canceled as restaurants and bars are closed).  The two medals for 2020 and 2021 fit together!


We will NOT hold a packet pick-up where registered runners can come to collect bibs, shirts, shoebags, training shirts and medals as that defeats the purpose of limiting interaction with people and social distancing. We will ship your swag (at our own cost) to you AFTER officials entrusted with protecting the public determine it is safe for our volunteers to gather and package the swag.

We will celebrate our 2020 Mountain Goat Run Hall of Fame inductees with a ceremony at the Mountain Goat Run monument in Upper Onondaga Park at a date yet to be determined.  Please follow us on social media to join us at the induction ceremony; maybe you can even wear your 2020 shirt and medal!
